As an owner of a Panasonic TZ1 I consider the M420 a step up. My consideration focuses on the wide angle 28mm lense, higher sensitivity with reasonable noise, similar macro photo results, and thinner package. I was most impressed with the M420′s ability to take a very low light, long exposure, photo in less time with better detail of far off object features. In the very low light photos the M420 captured more or the landscape than the TZ1. A distant basketball hoop net had better detail in the M420′s photo, the TZ1 didn’t clearly detail the net. An item that I noted when taking the macro photos is that the TZ1 has one more level of zoom on the LCD viewer that is handy when reading pictures of maps. When traveling I often take a photo of a map rather than carry the map. The LCD of the M420 is bigger but I’m sure the extra level of zoom would be handy. It is also annoying that the M420 and pretty much all similar cameras wake up by popping out their lens which isn’t required if your turning the camera on to view an existing picture ie: a map.
